NL Photography Peoria Illinois Glamour Photographer 2008 Photo Contest

NLP'S Annual Amateur Photo Contest Information

This year's Amateur Photo Contest Theme is "Doors"

Quote from the Judge: "Thanks for giving me this shot at being an "art" critic. It's something that is very subjective".

"My Choice for first place was entry 008. I liked that the shot was not straight on and the inside of the door was open slightly which, to me, beckons the viewer to enter and view more than just the little bit of antique newel post and stair going up to the second floor that is visible through the open door. I'm guessing from the large glass light in the door and the woodwork that I can see that this house is quite old, perhaps in the neighborhood of a hundred years." (WINNER: Susan Chancellor)

"If you had a second place, I would pick entry 002. Architecturally  I wish the owner of this door had not placed the conduits or armored cables through the door head in the upper left corner of the shot. That really made a muck of an otherwise great door. As far as the photo goes, I was wishing that the photographer had gotten a little more light on the subject, Used a tripod and a much slower shutter perhaps to bring out a little more details on the door itself." 001. "These are probably very interesting doors but a vertical shot, in my opinion, would have shown them better. I wanted to see the top part of the doors, too."

003. "I actually love this shot. It would make a good menu cover for a martini bar (put a tiny bit of hot light on the logo from the camera side to highlight the logo and make it stand out) but I felt that it did not give me enough perimeter to be absolutely certain that it is a door not a window." (Mike's note: I had told the judge the theme was "Doors".

004. "I felt that this would have been better as a vertical shot. My brain was looking for the bottom end of the barber poles."

005. This shot also interested me in that some of the interior was visible here, too. I was trying to tell if the metal door frames are brushed metal and reflecting something behind and left of the camera or if they were in the process of being refinished and had had some of their existing paint removed causing the multicolored look."

006. "This door has some history and makes me think of a side exit door of a school gym or cafeteria but I felt the railing in the foreground spoiled the view of the door too much. Unfortunately nothing can be done about that railing."

007. This one was another I would have liked to have seen as a vertical shot with the addition of a couple of halogen work lights out of line of sight of the camera but lighting up the interesting structure on the other side of the door."

009. "A nice shot of the front of a log structure. I like the leaves in the upper foreground helps me with the depth of the shot but it did not say "door" enough to me."

010. "Nice log structure but if it had been zoomed in to just the door and window with the corner structure on the right edge I feel it would have been a better "door" shot."

011. "A great rustic door on what looks like it might e a storage building or smokehouse judging by the ends of the logs protruding out through the wall above the door. It looks like the original latch was worked from the outside by a rope that would have passed through the hole in the door under the handle. This thing has some tales to tell if it could only talk."

012. "This one put a really big smile on my face when I saw it. That crooked door is beautiful.

013. "I feel that this view is too close up on what appears to be a hinge on a Dutch door on a barn or shed to be what I think of as a "door" shot.

(Mike's note: Number 014 contained a recognizable face. It was not judged).

I want to thank all the participants for their entries and in particular, I would like to thank the photographer (Kansas City, Mo.) who was kind enough to give his time and expertise to judge the submitted images.
